What to Wear for Winter Engagement Photos
Snowflakes and Style: Outfit tips for a winter engagement session
Winter engagement photo sessions offer a magical backdrop for couples with snow-covered landscapes, cozy vibes and romantic atmosphere. But when it comes to what to wear for such a shoot, choosing the right outfits is key to ensuring that the couple look their best, the photos look their best… and nobody freezes along the way.
My wife will say I'm the last person that should offer fashion tips - and for good reason. Here are some helpful tips on what to wear for a winter engagement photo session:
1. Layer Up
Winter weather can be chilly, so it's essential to dress in layers. A stylish jacket or coat is not only functional but can also add a fashionable element to your photos. Think about wearing a cozy sweater, a long wool coat, or a chic leather jacket. A scarf or gloves can further enhance the look while helping you stay warm. Layering your clothing allows you to adapt to the weather, and it also offers more opportunities for variety in your photos, especially when you remove or add layers throughout the session.
One of the best things about winter engagement sessions is that you can mix and match different outfits for variety. You could start with something casual - like a cozy sweater and jeans - and then switch to something dressier, such as a formal coat or a dressier jacket for a more sophisticated look. This gives you multiple photo options without needing to leave the location.
2. Coordinate Colours, Don’t Match Outfits
While it's a good idea for couples to complement each other in their wardrobe choices, avoid wearing identical outfits. I would recommend going for solid colours that complement each other - not match each another. Neutral shades like beige, grey and navy are always timeless. Deep greens, burgundy, red and mustard are bolder choices if you want a bolder choice. The only thing I would avoid are pastel colours.
3. Footwear
Winter engagements may involve walking through snow or uneven terrain, so choose footwear that’s both stylish and practical for the season. For women, knee-high boots or ankle boots can look great while still keeping your feet warm.
For men, high or low cut boots with good grip are both functional and fashionable. If you're shooting in the snow, it's a good idea to wear boots with traction to avoid slipping, especially if you plan to do any light off-roading beyond the main trails.
4. Seasonal Accessories
Winter accessories like hats, scarves, and gloves not only help keep you warm, but they can also add personality and style to your photos. A wool fedora, a cozy beanie, or a wide-brimmed hat can make a great statement. A scarf can create lovely movement in photos as it blows in the wind, while a pair of elegant leather gloves can add sophistication to your look.
5. Consider the Location
Think about the environment where your engagement photos will take place. If you're heading to a snowy mountain setting, formal or casual winter attire can look great. For a more rustic winter vibe, consider wearing earthy tones or cozy, layered looks. For an urban backdrop with winter elements, you might want to lean toward more polished outfits that add a contrast to the industrial surroundings.
6. Comfort is Key
While it’s important to look great, comfort is just as essential. If you're freezing or overly bundled up, it will show in your photos. Make sure you feel comfortable in your outfit, whether that means adjusting the layers or bringing extra accessories like hand warmers. Your comfort will reflect in the natural and relaxed vibe of the photos.
There's really no right or wrong here, the best advice I could give is to dress like you. Dressy, casual, laid back or bold. Let your own style and personality guide your outfit choices.
